Setting up 2 webservers at port 80 of the same machine

I had this problem where I have to setup IIS on a machine that already runs a webserver (CommunigatePro Webmail). The issue was I needed both to be accessible via port 80 so my clients will not have to connection to non-standard ports. After much research and testing, I managed to get this running. The solution is simply to have 2 IP address on the server (one for IIS, one for the other webserver), configure them both to listen only to their specific IPs. Now this seems easy, you just have to assign the IPs to the respective servers to listen to and that's it! But the problem is, IIS locks in to the port number, regardless of the IP address. Even if you specify a website as listening to only a particular IP, IIS will block the entire port number (80). Here's the work around on that: stop the WWW service ( net stop http /y ) grab the httpcfg.exe from your Windows 2003 install CD. It's packaged in the Support/Tools/Support.cab file. run this on the server: httpcfg set ipliste...

Annoying calls from Sales people

One thing that really bugs me is those Sales Agents who are just plain dumb. They do now know what they are talking about, asks weird questions, and have no clue how to pitch their products. They follow a script and sticks with it no matter what. I just answered an awful one just now and really, it can easily burn your mood. Here's the dialogue: Caller: Hi, may I speak to the IT Manager Me: Speaking.. Caller: Sir, are you facing any difficulties on your current computer systems. Me: Which system in particular? Caller: Everything, sir. Emails, virus, desktop issues, server administration Me: Ahhh...you expect me to share all of those to you in a phone call? Caller: Yes, sir! We want to help you so we want to know what problems you are facing now. Me: Instead of asking me, can you just tell me what products you are offering and I'll tell you if I'm interested? Caller: We offer many products, sir, and I need to know your problems so I can offer you the right product. Me: Then ...

Windows 7 on my Lenovo T400

Image
I've already upgraded my notebook to Windows 7 Professional two weeks ago. It's the final release the Microsoft sent to their volume license customers. We haven't bought our license yet so I'm using it on a 'trial' basis only, which I will need to activate within 30 days (12 days left at the time of this writing). Well here's are my feedback in case you are thinking about it. This review will be solely on the Lenovo T400 installation. The Good General Speed - I hated Vista because it made my laptop feel like a 486. It was just plain memory-hog. And that is why I downgraded back to XP after 3 months of it. In Windows 7, Microsoft did a good job of keeping the visual elements of Vista intact but keeping the speed up. The presentation doesn't interfere with productivity anymore. Boot-up Speed - definitely improved compared to Vista. I love how the boot-up process finishes in less than a minute, when it used to take me about 4 minutes when I was on Vista an...

Welcome

Hi everyone! I'm Jonathan and i'm an alcoholic! ohh, i meant techie! Setting up this new blog so I can share my experiences with computer systems to the whole. Hopefully, I'd be able to help others with tips and Q&As on their technical problems. But first, let me tell you who I am. I'm an IT professional who has been involved with many different aspects of Information Technology. I am a Filipino and I'm currently based in Singapore. I started out as a programmer for a multinational company, working mostly on books and print media. With the evolution of technology, we got involved more on web-based services so I had the chance, and I still do, to work on large scale website portals. Many of my projects are heavily data-driven, and I have been a DBA on some of my projects, which includes a real-time data replication between Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, and India. I have since moved to network and server administration, working on Windows servers, Cisco firewa...
