Outlook 2010 wont connect to Hotmail or Outlook.com

After reinstalling Ms Office 2010 on my computer to upgrade to the 64-bit version, my hotmail account stopped working. Outlook would not connect to my email accounts anymore and I was getting these error messages:

Task 'xxxxx@hotmail.com' reported error (0x8004102A) : 'Error with Send/Receive. There was an error synchronizing your folder hierarchy. Error : 80041004.'
Task 'xxxxx@hotmail.com' reported error (0x8DE00005) : 'There is an error synchronizing your mail account. Please verify your account is configured correctly by first accessing your mail on the web. Error: 3219. Server. An error occurred in looking up the user's information in mserv. '
 After much digging, I finally found that the issue was due to the version of Outlook that I have installed. Apparently, Microsoft have done some changes to Hotmail and Outlook accounts, migrating them to Exchange 365. After the migration, the accounts were no longer compatible with older builds of Ms Outlook.

For this to work again, I needed to upgrade my Outlook build to at least  build 14.0.7015.1000, which is Office 2010 SP2. This makes a lot of sense, because when I reinstalled, I used the DVD copy I had which was RTM release (build 14.0.4763.1000).

EDIT: The minimum version required is build 14.0.7140.5002, which is a patch on top of SP2


After installing SP2 from https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/2687455/description-of-office-2010-service-pack-2, then removing and re-adding my hotmail accounts, I was able to connect to my emails again.

Lenovo X1 Carbon Battery Problem - Plugged, Not Charging

The battery was draining and if you plug in the charger, it just says "Plugged In, Not Charging" To fix: Unplug the charger Restart the laptop Press Enter to interrupt normal startup Press F1 to enter the BIOS Seup Go to Config, Power Go to the bottom of the list where it says "Disable built-in battery". Press Enter. The laptop will shut down.  Plug in the charger and restart the laptop.

Multiple Remote Desktop sessions on Windows XP

Continuing on from my last post about setting up RemoteApp on Windows XP. I needed to make the old application available to multiple users, so I have decided to modify the Terminal Service in my WinXP box to allow multiple remote session. I found the instructions here . It's pretty simple. You just need to replace termsrv.dll file and apply some registry changes. But you do have to consider that Windows XP employs a Windows File Protection system that detects when system files are changed and replaces it back with the original microsoft version of it. Here's what I did: Grab the file termsrv_sp3_patch.rar from the link above. Back the file C:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll into another location.  Open service.msc and change the Start-up property of the Terminal Service to Disabled Restart the computer.
